Ottawa to play host to World Juniors
Hockey’s best young stars will be gathering in the nation’s capital this December and January as the IIHF World Junior Championship arrives in Ottawa.
The tournament will consist of the top players under 20 representing their national teams. The field includes 10 teams, including Canada and rivals the United States, Finland, Sweden, and Czechia, alongside emerging hockey powers like newly-promoted Kazakhstan. Players will come from the National Hockey League (NHL), junior hockey leagues, minor leagues, and college hockey, with many current NHL stars having played in the event themselves.
The tournament format will consist of two groups of five teams, with the top four in each group advancing to a knock-out tournament, and the remaining two battling in a relegation play-off to qualify for next year’s event.
The World Juniors games will be split between the Ottawa area’s two professional hockey arenas, the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata and the TD Place Arena in the Bytowne area of downtown Ottawa. There will also be a number of cultural shoulder events around the tournaments. Originally a somewhat obscure tournament, the World Juniors have become a holiday tradition in Canada, with four of the last six tournaments taking place in the Great White North, and Ottawa most recently hosting the event in 2009. Major sporting events like this use everything from flyer printing to TV marketing campaigns to attract ticket buyers.
The 2025 IIHF World Juniors tournament will take place from December 26 to January 5 at the Canadian Tire Centre and TD Place Arena in Ottawa.
