The annual awards, Canada’s only national book design competition, recognize 40 aesthetically-designed Books, with categories including Children, Limited Editions, and Reference. Winning Books from 2024 include graphic novel The Gulf, poetry volume The Undesirables: a bestiary, and non-fiction collection A Nations Paper: The Globe and Mail in the Life of Canada.
All winning Books will be on display in the museum’s Library and Archives section. The award winners have been a staple of this section of the National Gallery since the first annual exhibition in 2013. The display highlights the importance of book design, which printing services and shops often specialize in.
The Alcuin Society exhibit is part of the National Gallery’s fall schedule, which will see new displays in most of the Gallery’s exhibition spots, including the 2025 Sobey Art Award Exhibition and “Winter Count: Embracing the Cold.” Promotional material describes the book design exhibit as:
“A must-see for bibliophiles, and for anyone with an interest in the fine art of book design.”
The 2024 Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada winners exhibit will be on display from September 4 to October 12 at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
