Ottawa to host national athletics championship
The Canadian Track & Field Champiomships will go down in the nation’s capital this summer, with the country’s top athletes competing in a variety of events.
The championships are hosted by Athletics Canada with local support from the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club. There will be competition in the open, U20, and Para Athletics competitions for male and female athletes. Events include track racs at a variety of distances and classic field events like high jump, shotput and hammer throw. Combination events like the decathlon will also take place throughout the weekend. In addition to crowning Canadian champions, the top finishers will qualify for this year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
In addition to the events hosted in the stadium, there will be a long-distance race walk going down Colonel Bly Drive. There will also be a coaching exchange event where track and field coaches can meet, enjoy a catered lunch, and learn from each other in a “Speed Dating/Ask Me Anything” structure. Coaches and athletes often make connections through business cards and professional networking just like other professionals. There will also be athletics merchandise available for sale at the event such as hoodies, T-shirts and bags.
