The Challenges and Rewards of Small Businesses in Canada

Being an entrepreneur is a very respectable position, at least according to 94% of the Canadians polled by the CFIB, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business located in Mississauga, ON.

A further 92% polled responded they would be happy and supportive if their son or daughter started an independent business. Statistics and attitudes were published in the CFIB’s study entitled Perspectives on Small Businesses in Canada. The study surveys 1,160 businesses in various industries as well as 2,028 Canadians of varying background.

Small and independent businesses form the bulk of companies in the printing services industry and many of the challenges highlighted in the study are also challenges that indirect face the Print industry as well. While the study did highlight that an impressive 98% of Canadians believe that small industries are important to Canada’s future, 71% believe there is an underemphasis on entrepreneurship in schools and over 90% also felt that entrepreneurs were devalued by government.

Entrepreneurs in the Print industry will also side with the 81% of business owners who felt that technology investments could help meet or exceed their expectations. Investments in technology should in fact form part of a long term growth strategy for any entrepreneur in the highly competitive printing services industry. Over 75% of small business owners say they are matching or exceeding the technology level of their competitors.

Competition, regulation and bureaucracy were the tough operating challenges highlighted in the study.

The CFIB was founded in 1971 and represents over 108,000 members from various industries nationwide.
