Print becoming more fashionable, survey says

Printers in the Mississauga and Toronto area and all across Canada will be pleased to read the newest findings published by JWT Intelligence, a think tank based out of New York that recently released its 100 Things to Watch in 2012 list. The items noted point to trends in printing publications that will become popular as the year goes on.

Postcard printing from digital files will be something to look out for this year. Applications that are emerging allow users to turn snapshots into printed snail mail Postcards to give mailings a personal and high tech touch.

As Facebook and other social media websites continue to revolutionize marketing and communication, ‘online lives’ will begin to appear in printed versions. Certain projects already allow users to store information into physical data into printed stickers and flipbooks. Small stationary printers that even work with smart phones allow receipt or postage stamp size printings.

The think tank also noted that people are beginning to feel the need for more tangible products resulting in a surprising increase of printed letters and letterpress printed cards in 2011. This is great news for writing paper and embossed paper retailers, as they can take advantage of the resurgence of interest in printed material.

A few other trends may threaten some of the traditional uses of paper. For example, according to the report airlines in the US are allowed to use tablets instead of on board printed manuals, thus supplanting the need for printed documents. Some US cities may follow suit, although it is not yet known if the trend will take hold in Canadian cities like Mississauga.
