Print companies in the Greater Toronto area and Mississauga who purchase suppliers from paper merchant PaperlinX will now purchase supplies under the operations’ new Spicers name after a merger between three operating companies.
PaperlinX was part of a recent merger between Spicers, Coast Paper and Roll-O-Vert that saw the amalgamation of multiple brands under one name.
PaperlinX, who is a distributer of fine paper for stationary printers, graphic arts, sign display and industrial Packaging, will continue to operate in a single business unit within its current distribution centre in Vaughan, Ontario. It will also be discontinuing all brand names apart from the Spicers brand.
When questioned on the motive of the merger, and brand consolidation PaperlinX president Cory Turner responded that there was a clear need to simplify the business and make a clearer point of contact for clients who purchase supplies for stationary printers. PaperlinX’s suppliers had also been calling for a brand consolidation. He reiterated that it was not a shutdown as much as it is “an integration of the business”.
On the downside an ‘integration of business’ comes with some consequences, including a few layoffs. The company admits that a few sales representatives were let go, however reiterates that out of 600 employees, those laid off will remain fewer than 10.
Similar brand consolidations have been done in other Canadian cities, like Montreal and Winnipeg, as recently as six month ago.
PaperlinX entire transition is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2012.
