The citizens of Mississauga have made many significant contributions to the area over the years, and the city’s new Legends Row is set to recognize their accomplishments.
Earlier this month it was announced that there will be 10 inductees in this first year of the program. They include, among others, Jazz great Oscar Peterson, the rock band Triumph, Lata Pada, who created the Sampadaya dance company, and Chuck Johnson who founded the Southside Shuffle.
While some of the honorees may be quite famous, others are less well known. Household name or not, they have all made a difference and are a big part of what makes Mississauga so appealing to visitors.
The media launch was attended by the mayor and several other dignitaries, including Ron Araquette, who was Mississauga’s citizen of the year in 2009. He came up with the idea for Legends Row as a way to celebrate the achievements of the city’s residents. A banner printing company produced colorful Signs and Posters that were used to decorate the ceremony.
Legends Row will be housed temporarily in Jubilee gardens, but will find a more permanent home in the southeast corner of Celebration Square. This area was chosen because it is visited by one million people a year, many of them new Canadians. It is hoped that the display will help to put them in touch with the historical roots of the city.
The permanent location will also include 11 additional displays that will tell the history of the different towns and villages that came together in 1974 to form the city of Mississauga.
