Mississauga continues on sustainability drive

Mississauga’s city council continued to work towards its goal of making the city more environmentally friendly at a meeting recently.

The members present at the gathering, which took place at the end of September, pledged their commitment to supporting renewable sources of energy in the city and also to upgrading the council’s fleet of vehicles to use more eco-friendly options.

One of the alternative power sources currently in use is solar energy, with a number of solar panels installed on rooftops throughout the city. These help to supply power for several buildings.

There are currently 27 Small Feed-in Tariff (FIT) programs in place throughout the city, providing as much as 4,646 kilowatts of energy. This is enough to power 1,700 homes for a year. The contribution will help to reduce the impact of the community’s energy needs on the environment, and will also help to lower energy costs.

The next application period for the FIT contracts will be from November 4 until December 20. A Print company has produced application Forms for those interested in taking part in the program.

The council also recognized the success of their other green programs. One of these is the Greening Our Fleet Program, which involved the city using smaller hybrid vehicles whenever possible. This not only reduced emissions by as much as 193 tons per year, it lowered overall fuel costs too, freeing up funding for other areas. Several completely electric vehicles were also added to the fleet.
