The Ontario government recently announced that it plans to widen the highway that runs between Mississauga’s Credit River and Hurontario Street.
The upgrade will take the four-kilometer stretch of highway 401 to 12 lanes from 6. It is hoped that this upgrade will ease traffic congestion, facilitate easier transportation of goods to and from the city and provide employment opportunities for 800 people who work in the construction field.
The plan for the $81 million project will result in a roadway with two lanes for high occupancy vehicles, and 10 general purpose lanes. It is hoped that the high occupancy lanes will encourage more people to carpool or make use of public transportation services. It is part of the province’s $2.1 billion in roadway infrastructure improvements that were recently announced, and the goal is for it to be completed by 2019.
Steven Del Duca, who is the Ontario Minister of Transportation, remarked that this improvement in traffic flow would provide a boost to local businesses and make travel easier for people who live or work in the area. Projects such as this can also provide spin off benefits to companies in the local community, such as those that provide sign printing services.
Further details about this improvement to the roadway infrastructure in Mississauga can be found on the Government of Ontario’s press release website.
