New transit line to be built in the GTA

Residents of Mississauga and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area will soon find their journeys to and from the airport a whole lot easier, thanks to the construction of a new express rail line.

The line will run from the Pearson International Airport to Union Station, with stops at the Bloor and Weston GO stations. The stop at Union Station will be just west of its current rail shed, with the end of the line being at Pearson’s Terminal 1. It will also be connected with the city’s current extensive subway, bus, and streetcar transit systems to allow maximum efficiency.

The trip will take approximately 25 minutes and with services running every 15 minutes, it will provide a convenient and lower priced alternative to taking a taxi. It will also be a viable option for people from around the city who want to leave their cars at home and avoid the long drive and the high cost of parking at the airport. It is estimated that the development will result in around 1.2 million fewer car trips per year throughout the metro area.

Print companies are expected to produce signage for the new system, and poster printing firms will likely find themselves being asked to create advertisements that will be used in the new rail cars and stops.

The new line will be run by Metrolinx, and it is slated for completion in time for the 2015 PanAm and ParaPam games.
