A study has been delivered to Guelph city council that outlines progress made on the measures that need to be taken to protect its urban forest canopy.
The document notes that both a full time inspector arborist and an arborist are needed in order for the city to be able to both deal with the threat posed by the emerald ash borer and still have time to dedicate to the other measures that need to be taken to help keep the trees thriving.
In 2012, Guelph adopted a plan with a 20-year long cycle. It included hiring new staff members to help cope with the damage the borer may cause. Four of these positions have now been filled.
The report further goes on to discuss the expansion of the trees in the community from 20% to 40%. It notes that this can be beneficial to the overall “liveability” of the area.
Besides the hiring of the new staff members, the report states that an urban forest advisory committee has been stood up, and a plan to combat the emerald ash borer, work is progressing on completion the records of the trees in the city’s record, has been completed. Of the twenty-two recommendations in the plan, thirteen were scheduled to begin by 2014, and six of these are nearly complete, five are continuing and the final two steps are pending.
