An upcoming event at University of Guelph is looking to bring the world of wizardry to life.
Fans of the Harry Potter Books and films will no doubt be familiar with the Triwizard Tournament, a three-pronged competition that factors heavily into the plot of the series’ fourth installment, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Guelph’s version of the event won’t feature challenges like facing a dragon or swimming with mermaids, but hopes to provide plenty of fun for both casual and hardcore fans.
The local Triwizard Tournament will feature three stages: a grounded Quidditch match, based on the magical sport portrayed in the series, a ‘magical escape room’, and a scavenger hunt for enchanted objects.
Guelph has a full-time quidditch team that competes in regional tournaments, part of an ongoing effort by fans to turn part of their favourite series into a real-life sport. The Gryphons were victorious in the Eastern regional tournament this past fall.
The event will take place on March 24 across the University of Guelph campus. Local fandom events are typically amateur events featuring long hours of crafting and set-up, with some help from local businesses such as Print shops for banner printing or restaurants for catering.
Organizers no doubt hope that ongoing interest in the fantasy series will make their tournament a success – and hopefully give it a brighter ending than the one in the books.
