The town of Guelph, Ontario will celebrate International Women’s Day with a special lecture and dinner presented by a host of civic organizations.
The event is the eighth annual such production of the IWD Guelph-Wellington, a coalition of organizations such as YMCA-YWCA of Guelph, the local Chamber of Commerce, and the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs. Previous events have been presented under the name “Ignite. Empower. Innovate.”
While welcoming women from all walks of life, the main audience is professional and entrepreneurial women. The dinner promotes networking, such as the trading of Business Cards and promotional Pens, and forming connections that can help women support each other.
After dinner, there will be a presentation from Pamela Barnum, an expert on body language and other nonverbal communication. Barnum is a former undercover police officer whose recent TEDx talk attracted more than 200, 000 views in six months. Her speech will focus on how to improve confidence and trust in one’s instincts. Proceeds from the gala will go to the YMCA-YWCA’s Safe Sisters program, a drop-in program designed to create a safe space for girls in grades seven and eight that encourages “personal safety and positive well-being in terms of their community, their own bodies and social media.”
The event will take place at The Grand Guelph on March 5, which is International Women’s Day itself.
