A program is now being offered to residents of Guelph to help them have lawns and gardens that are both attractive and water efficient.
The initiative, which has been labeled “The Healthy Landscapes Program”, was developed to help conserve the area’s groundwater supplies. According to Karen McKeown, who works with the water services for the city, one of its major components are the Healthy Landscape Visits, during which an expert will come to a property and do a water assessment. There is no charge for this service, which takes about 45 minutes to complete.
Once it is finished, the homeowner is given advice on how to save water, plant selection, and also information about how trees can successfully be used in the landscape and how to pant them properly so they will have the best chance of becoming well established. Those who conduct the visits have been specially trained for the conditions that exist in the different areas of Guelph.
Along with this, a variety of tips can be found on the city’s website, and information packages have been prepared for distribution at public events. Ad specialties can be designed by a printer for use in educational efforts such as this.
