Guelph was recently the scene for an event that challenged people to change the way they think about the environment and their role in protecting it.
Over 100 people came together to let the mayor and city council know how they view sustainability and also the community energy initiative that Guelph has adopted. The gathering, which came to known as Cool the Planet, was just one of thousands that were held all over the globe to mark the occasion of the Climate Change Conference which was being staged in Paris.
George Kelly, who is the chairperson for the Guelph and Wellington Coalition for Social Justice, was on hand. He asked the crowd as well as all residents of the community to take stock and see what steps they could take, on an individual daily basis, to lower their carbon footprint. He made some suggestions, such as carpooling, using the public transportation system, buying locally grown organic produce and “fair trade” products, and trying to find ways to re-purpose or recycle unwanted items. In an address to those who participated in the event, Ward 3 Councilor Phil Allt remarked that the city is well ahead of many in its environmental initiatives, and this points to the community placing a lot of value on sustainability.
