The tournament is open to karateka in all disciplines, ages, and experience levels. Competitions will be held in three different events: kata, or performing set routines skilfully; kobudo, the use of kata with weapons; and kumite, point-based sparring with light contact. Each event will have different levels based on age and belt levels. The goal is to create a welcoming atmosphere where martial artists from Guelph and surrounding areas can develop their skills:
“We wish to provide a healthy, safe, and competitive environment and to bring dojos from all disciplines of karate together to support martial arts in the community.”
Proceeds from the Guelph Open will go towards the Guelph Wish Fund for Children, a charity organization that looks to provide unique experiences for children suffering debilitating illness by granting wishes. The tournament will also be holding a silent auction to further raise money for the charity. Charities often use sporting events such as this as a way to find support in the community, often using brochure printing and informational presentations to highlight the work they are doing.
The 2023 Guelph Open tournament will take place on November 25 at Centennial CVI. All participants must have appropriate gis and other equipment.
