Park-goers in Guelph may be surprised to find giant spiders in Exhibition Park, which are all part of an exhibition called Spider Secrets.
The exhibition has been designed to educate and highlight the natural world in an outdoor environment, and it is part of Guelph’s Art in the Park initiative. The Downtown Theatre Project, Royal City Musical Productions and Guelph Little Theatre have joined forces to create larger-than-life spider scenes.
The concept was created by Paul Barson and Barb Bryce, who also helped to research and produce the unique installation. The project consists of nine spiders located at different spots throughout the park, with titles like Knitting Spider, Spider Momma, Lunch Time Spider and even Spider Music, which features arachnids perched on a guitar and speaker.
Each part of the installation includes scientific information about spiders and their habits. Signs also include QR Codes that can link viewers to more information on a city website.
Spider Secrets follows up on previous installations and productions, such as Winter Woodland Theatre, which featured theatrical scenes, providing theatre production staff with a way to reach the community during periods of social distancing. Efforts like this, often promoted using banner printing and other eye-catching displays, have become a popular way to spice up public spaces.
Spider Secrets launched in October and will remain at Guelph’s Exhibition Park into early December.
