Drones were a popular gift this past holiday season, and Guelph Hydro would like to remind owners to use them safely.
The utility sent out

One hazard that operators may face is getting their equipment caught in power lines. The utility wanted to let people know that, should this happen to them, they can call the power company and a truck will be dispatched to retrieve it for them.
Another piece of information they wanted to share that some may not be aware of is that the electromagnetic fields produced by power lines can make it difficult to accurately fly a drone because they can affect its navigation equipment. This means that it’s best to choose a location that has plenty of open space to fly.
The other safety rules Guelph Hydro wanted to remind people of include that it’s best to fly during daylight and in good weather, don’t fly drones near traffic or the airport, don’t fly one more 90 meters high and always keep it in sight.
