A festival that aims to celebrate cultural diversity in the Guelph region will return this month after a one-year absence with a special online event.
The Guelph & District Multicultural Festival has been a staple of the region for decades, sometimes drawing up to 25,000 people, but it was cancelled for the first time last year due to social distancing restrictions. The funds and programming from last year’s event have been repurposed into a free, three-day digital livestream, highlighting local talent and businesses. The event is supported by a host of sponsors, as well as funds from Canadian Heritage and the City of Guelph.
The digital event, called the Virtual Winter Festival, will aim to maintain the physical festival’s opportunities for local vendors, artisans and businesses, allowing them to showcase their wares and take online orders. Local festivals can be a big opportunity for small businesses, using Business Cards and conversation to make connections that can support them year-round.
There will also be a series of live-streamed performances highlighting different cultural celebrations and art Forms. Online applications will be used to select the line-up.
The virtual edition of the Guelph & District Multicultural Festival will take place online between March 26 and 28. The goal is to build towards the return of the full festival this summer, featuring both online and in-person components.
