Guelph charity shop celebrates 70 years today

IODE Opportunity shop in Guelph, Ontario, is celebrating 70 years and business has never been better. The shop has a far-reaching impact on the community, since most of the merchandise is donated and proceeds are later reinvested in community projects. In fact, the opportunity shop has managed to produce an impressive $850,000 in its 70 years of operation, not bad for a store run exclusively by volunteers.

The chapter donates 26 awards to high school students at a local Guelph school and also sponsors the school’s Own a Book- Share a Book Program, offering books to each child in kindergarten, as well as one to the school library. Proceeds from the IODE chapter have also gone to fund local food banks, women’s shelters, and Guelph General Hospital.

IODE Opportunity Shop remains open only five afternoons a week, and has been involved in community outreach programs since its opening back in 1942.

As the charity and used-items thrift shop turns 70 today, July 3, there are plenty of opportunities for advertisers to help promote this milestone in a community that has benefited so much from the charity shop’s donations. To celebrate their 70th birthday, IODE Opportunity Shop is offering a half price clothing sale and one-day special on merchandise. Local print companies can help promote the event with local poster printing in and around window shops and on billboards.

Today, IODE Opportunity Shop will also serve its patrons coffee and tea. A Local MP is also expected to be on hand to show his support.
