The Ballet Jorgen company will be coming to Guelph this April for a presentation of its ballet based on Romeo and Juliet.
The production uses choreography from Bengt Jorgen, interpreting the Shakespearean tragedy into a new medium. The show uses music from legendary Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev and performances from 14 dances, including everything from romantic scenes to sword fights. This version of the production uses minimalist sets by Glenn Davidson and colourful costumes by Gary Dahms to transport the audience to Renaissance Italy. Jorgen’s version of Romeo and Juliet has been performed across the world, including appearances in the United States and China, and received considerable acclaim.
The Guelph performance is part of Ballet Jorgen’s 2021-22 season, which will see the company traveling across its native Canada before heading into the United States and eventually concluding with a week-long stay in Toronto. In addition to Romeo and Juliet, the tour also includes performances of Anne of Green Gables: The Ballet, based on the classic Canadian children’s novel.
Ballet performances, often promoted through poster printing and social media, can use popular stories as a way to expose new audiences to the classical art form.
Ballet Jorgen’s production of Romeo and Juliet will come to Guelph’s River Run Centre on April 5 as part of the venue’s Showcase Series.
