Guelph award ceremony to take place virtually

The Guelph Women of Distinction awards will take place digitally this year, and it will honour women who have made a difference in the local community.

Women of Distinction is an annual event ran by the YMCA of Three Rivers and Innovation Guelph to celebrate International Women’s Day. Community members submitted nominations for the awards last year, with the most compelling suggestions selected by the event organizers. There will be two special awards – the Turning Point Award, recognizing young mothers who have overcome significant challenges, and the Lifetime Achievement Award, for those who have contributed to the community over a long time.

As with last year’s event, the awards ceremony will be broadcast over the Zoom platform, but the event will try to preserve the atmosphere of an in-person celebration.

The Women of Distinction awards ceremony will include a musical performance by Jamaican-Canadian soul singer Joni NehRita. There will also be a virtual version of the typical marketplace of local women-led businesses. Whether virtual or in-person, sharing Business Cards or social media links at markets like these can provide big opportunities for small businesses. Proceeds from the event will go towards YMCA programs like Safe Sisters, the Teenage Parents Program and Encore.

The 27th annual Women of Distinction event will take place virtually on the evening of March 8, with the event broadcast from the Grand Guelph Banquet & Event Centre.
