Residents of Guelph could soon find that St. George’s Square may have a look that harkens back to days gone by.
The town’s Planning, Building, Engineering and Environment committee has looked at several ideas about improving the area, and it recently singled out what it believes to be the best.
The idea calls for the construction of a traffic circle that surrounds a wide area that can be used for different events like festivals, farmers markets, and other activities. There will be seating and green spaces.
It also calls for angled parking on Wyndham Street, which will increase the total number of spaces available by 25 and stands as welcome news to the area’s merchants.
The streets that feed into the area will be able to be closed off for parades and other events, and there will also be wider sidewalks and bike lanes.
This is all part of a plan to revitalize the infrastructure of the area, and it is reminiscent of a time when the center of town was the home of St. George’s Church.
The improvements are expected to carry a price tag of around $18.5 million and, should they receive the full approval of the council, construction could start as soon as 2015.
