A health centre’s project to deliver clothing to those in need in Southern Ontario has launched to great success in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, and it plans to expand to Guelph this winter.
The project is the brainchild of the Sanguen Health Centre, a Ministry of Health-funded agency that aims to provide support to marginalized individuals facing issues such as mental health and homelessness. It runs regular mobile health vans to provide services like vaccination and testing for hepatitis to those who might not seek it out on their own. Now, it has converted one of its vans into a mobile clothing shop, providing items such as coats, footwear, gloves and Bags.
The goal of the project is to provide choice and comfort to those in need by offering a variety of items that can help protect against the chill of an Ontario winter. So far, the van has provided clothing to over 350 people. The project currently runs every Tuesday in Cambridge, with plans to expand to Kitchener and Guelph.
Charitable programs like this typically offer services as well as education through tools like brochure printing and in-person outreach. Social distancing regulations have made physical outreach more difficult, but have also created a greater need that institutions such as the Sanguen Centre hope to fill.
The Sanguen Centre plans to expand its clothes delivery to Guelph in February, at a rate of at least one visit a month. The group is currently looking for donations of winter clothing and bags.
