For the 17th year running, the Ontario city of Guelph shut down a city block to highlight local artists last month.
Quebec Street became an open-air marketplace for arts, crafts, and graphic design, featuring over 80 artists. St. George’s square became the Children’s Art Festival, featuring both activities and kid-run stalls selling art instead of lemonade, known as the Mini Maker Market. The festival showcased visual art, sculpture, hand-crafting, and other Forms of artistic creation.
Awards were also given out for particularly successful artists. Dawn Anderson Vaughan’s pastel and paint creations won the People’s Choice Awards, while Gina Duque was given the People’s Choice Award for mixed-media work focusing on biological structures. Nicole Gagnon’s ecologically-friendly wooden jewelry and accessories were popular and took home the award of ‘Best Booth’. Whether or not they won an award, Ontario artisans were able to provide customers with gifts, decorations, Promotional Products, and souvenirs in a variety of media.
The day (June 22) featured sunny weather which helped attract a large crowd. In addition to browsing the stalls, visitors could take a curated tour showcasing the best of the festival. The annual event is a creation the Guelph Arts Council and the Downtown Guelph Business Association. With the strong attendance of this year’s event, it may remain a fixture of Southern Ontario’s art scene for many years to come.
