Halifax West High School educates about mental health

Teachers at Halifax West High School will have the opportunity to educate their students about psychosis and mental health issues after a heart-warming talk last week from a student who displayed violent episodes of hallucination and terrifying nightmares.

The talk highlighted the importance of a huge support system and of eliminating the stigma associated with mental illness. The student’s talk was also an opportunity for teachers to reflect on what they know and do not know about mental illness.

A study conducted by the Canadian Teacher’s Federation revealed that of the 3,990 teachers who participated in the survey, many identified ADD, depression, and stress as ongoing issues in the classroom, yet few admitted they felt prepared to deal with mental health issues while at work.

This lack of training and need for student education on anxiety disorders and mental health issues potentially points to future printing services of local printers in the Halifax area. To help educate both teachers and students about ongoing mental health problems that affect and impair students in the classroom, printers could help to disseminate important information about causes, symptoms, and treatment options through brochure printing and pamphlet printing. Teachers may also receive printed training on how to handle mental health issues among their pupils.

In fact, a mental health curriculum developed by a professor of psychiatry at the Dalhousie Medical School will soon find its way into the Grade 9 curriculum in Nova Scotia, beginning in September 2012. Students and teachers will also have the opportunity to learn about mental health issues through traditional forms of print.
