What's Happening in North Vancouver, BC…

Outdoor movie series comes to North Vancouver

A series of events that lets North Vancouver families watch movies under the night sky has launched its summer slate.

The Sunset Cinema series will run every week during July and August. The series kicked off with a July 6 showing of the animated movie Surf’s Up, a 2007 parody of extreme sports documentaries starring a surfing penguin. The films selected include a combination of comedies and adventure movies that are appropriate for a family audience. Future showings include the acclaimed Pixar movie WALL-E, the ABBA-infused musical Mamma Mia!, and the 1980s time-travel classic Back to the Future. The outdoor screenings are free of charge and hosted by the City of North Vancouver.

The movies are held later in the evening to accommodate the summer sunsets. Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or deck chair and enjoy the ocean-side atmosphere. Outdoor and drive-in movie events have become popular summer fare in recent years, often promoted through vintage poster printing and social media and showcasing films that have stood the test of time.

North Vancouver alone is also home to the Deckchair Cinema series, which offers more adult fare ranging from documentaries to international animated features, and the downtown Summer Movie Nights.

Sunset Cinema events will run at the Shipyard Commons in North Vancouver every Wednesday evening until August 24.
