The Alley-Oop basketball tournament will take place in Abbotsford this spring, aiming to provide opportunities for British Columbia’s best young hoopers.
There will be two tournament weekends, dubbed the BC Opener and the BC Main Event. The tournament is aimed at boys and girls aged 9 to 18, with five different age categories for each gender. Games will use FIBA rules with two 24-minute halves, with a running clock for most of the game. One player from each team will also have a chance to hit a half-court shot for prize money at half time as part of the “Splash For Cash” contest. Abbotsford’s Tradex building will be transformed into a basketball centre with several courts for simultaneous play.
The Alley-Oop tournament has previously had strong success in Alberta, boasting of being the largest youth basketball tournament in Canada. Players register as part of pre-existing club teams. Youth sporting events like this often use methods like banner printing or trophy making to help commemorate winners and create a competitive spirit.
Alley-Oop events distinguish themselves from other youth tournaments by being based in a single location, eliminating travel and creating a more festive atmosphere with parents and friends in the stands.
The BC Opener will take place on May 9 to 11, with registration open until April 15. The BC Main Event will follow on May 30-June 1, with registration ending on May 9.
