A visit to an Abbotsford area truffiere will give the public a behind-the-scenes look at how these fungi are harvested, and some four legged friends will be along as well.
While many may be familiar with truffles, they may not know that the province of British Columbia has a thriving community of truffle harvesters who gather this local crop.
Those who sign up to take part in the session will pay a visit to the province’s only truffle orchard, which serves as a source for Bianchetto truffles. The Mediterranean native is grown in a few select locations in North America, and for one afternoon only, members of the public will be able to watch area truffle hunters at work, along with their trained dogs.
While the truffle experts lead then group on a hunt for this storied ingredient, they will be able to share their knowledge with the participants. The orchard is located in a secret location in the local area, and along with the hunt and harvest, the group will be treated to some truffle hors d’oeuvres.
The outing has a higher purpose on raising money for the UBC Farm’s demonstration truffle orchard, and using materials from a flyer printing service can help to make sure this sort of function is well attended.
The registrants for this truffle harvest demo will be hitting the orchard on March 1 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. The exact location will be distributed to the ticket holders closer to the day of the event.
