The Canadian dollar is currently at a low point against the US dollar, and this has been positive news for many Abbottsford retailers.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency, there have been fewer people crossing the border between Abbotsford and Huntingdon to go shopping. There were 30,000 fewer people who made the trip than there were last year, which translates into a 24.7 percent reduction.
The loonie, which currently has a value around 0.80 US dollars, has much less buying power for those who tend to do their shopping south of the border. Based upon the numbers, many of them are choosing to spend their money at home instead, which is better for the local economy.
Also welcome news is the fact that, as their dollars can buy more in Canada, many in the US are planning to take their vacations in Canada, or will travel north to take in a show or other form of entertainment. According to a representative of the Retail Council of Canada, this could mean a boost to revenue for the Canadian businesses that are close to the border between the two countries.
When retailers expect an increase in footfall, a printing company can create printed advertisements and other promotional materials that make consumers aware of the benefits of shopping at home.
