A long-time resident of Abbotsford International Airport has been moved to a new place of honor befitting the role it once played in the national defense system.
The CF-101 Voodoo has been moved to the grand entrance that leads to the main terminal. This aircraft was used by the Canadian Air Force in the 1970s as part of the front line interception system of NORAD during the Cold War era.
The move required the use of some very precise logistics, as well as a crane from Englewest that was capable of lifting 200 tones. The fighter jet had to be lifted over a light pole before it was placed onto a flatbed truck that had been enhanced with special equipment, enabling it to accommodate the extra wide landing gear on the aircraft.
The move came about thanks to funds being reinvested in the airport, in the form of renovations and upgrades, since 1997.
According to the Chair of the Abbotsford Airport Authority, these improvements have been made possible by a strong sense of cooperation between all the partners and other stakeholders involved in the project.
An upgrade such as this helps to link a current facility to the historic elements of the area’s past. It also gives the airport a special character all on its own. Postcard printing firms could use the image of the aircraft in front of the airport, creating Postcards and other promotional items that can be sold inside the terminal.Get a Free Quote for Postcards
