An Abbotsford pumpkin farmer has shown he has what it takes to grow the biggest of the big.
Dave Kyle put his green thumb to the test when he grew a giant sized pumpkin that weighs in at 620 pounds. Even his smaller versions of this favorite of squashes were still extra large, with most reaching between 200 to 400 pounds.
The was trying as hard as he could to encourage them to grow, as he wanted to enter his “biggie” in a pumpkin growing competition that was being held by the Canadian Compost Council. For the contest, each contestant was given two seeds from the same pumpkin, and they were all subject to the same rule that it could only be fertilized and grown using organic elements. Nothing artificial was allowed.
The winner of the contest is awarded a $500 prize, which is donated to the charity of his or her choosing. They also get bragging rights, as they have shown that they are the best when it comes to growing a supreme squash. Photos of the entries can be used to create Calendars that can be sold to help raise even more funds for not for a not for profit group.
Mr. Kyle proved you can still grow a winner using natural methods. He noted that this is the sixth year that he has tried to win, and he learns something new with every attempt. He also remarked that the hot summer also helped.
