At the end of September, police and other emergency service workers began their annual ‘Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley’ bicycle ride through the Fraser Valley. The tour will include several stops, including Abbotsford.
The opening ceremony took place at Betty Gilbert Middle School in Aldergrove, with a number of students also taking part.
Last year, more than $420,000 was raised to support research into pediatric cancer, and also to assist the families of children who are battling the disease. Some of the money was also used to help fund Camp Good Times, which is a special place for the children to have fun during the summer. Through the years, more than $21 million has been raised throughout the province of British Columbia.
This year, there will be 26 people riding in the tour. The route will take them over 800 km, and will last for nine days. Among those participating will be the 10 junior members who are either currently battling the disease or who are in remission
Each participant must carry out his or her own fundraising work, and all of the money they raise will go to the charity. None of it is used for accommodation during the event.
Fortunately, many local businesses will be providing food and shelter for those who are taking part, and others have made generous donations to the campaign. Some of the riders used the services of a Print company to help produce Banners and other promotional materials to spread the word about the cause.
