Comedic boy band to play Abbotsford

Abbotsford will play host to improv group The Comedy Department this January as it present its show “Middle Aged Boy Band.”

The show is a loving spoof of the era of 1980s and 90s boy bands and their many reunion tours, bringing together the fictitious “Greatest Boy Band that Never Was” for a musical comedy. While using the general storyline of a washed-up reunion, the show will also incorporate improvised elements from crowd suggestions, resulting in each event being unique. The show has been a hit, with promotional material emphasizing the improvisatory nature:

“Some of Canada’s sharpest improv comedians will take the stage, whipping up hilarious comedy based on your suggestions. They’ll belt out improvised love ballads that’ll make your heart flutter with laughter. And their dance moves are as smooth as their bald spots!”

The Comedy Department is headed up by David Milchard and Denise Jones, and features comedians who have performed across Canadian institutions such as Just for Laughs, CBC, and Vancouver TheatreSports. Comedy shows like this often use methods like flyer printing and podcast appearances to help reach local lovers of laughter. Middle Aged Boy Band is one of the group’s touring shows, alongside Citizen Hurricane, and weekly improv shows hosted in Vancouver.

Middle Aged Boy Band will be performed at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium in Abbotsford on February 28.
