For this year’s holiday season, the Gallery 7 Theatre in Abbotsford will present the Hungarian Christmas story Parfumerie.
The story is a romantic comedy set in 1930s Budapest, with miscommunication causing chaos among the employees of a perfume store. The play, written by Miklos Laszlo, was a hit upon its initial release in 1937 and formed the basis for movies like The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail, as well as the musical She Loves Me. The Gallery 7 rendition, directed by Sarah Green based on the E. P. Dowdall adaptation, will stick closer to the original play, including its holiday setting. The play will star local actors including Quinn Martens, Liam Whatley, and Victoria Zator.
The show runs approximately two hours with a twenty-minute intermission. Parfumerie is part of Gallery 7 Theatre’s 2024-2025 season, which features the overall theme “Under Pressure.” Parfumerie will follow the November production of Prince Caspian, based on the Narnia novel, and will be followed in January by the drama Irena’s Vow. Local theatrical productions like this often draw on area talent and volunteer efforts, with supports from local businesses such as Print shops for advertising or secondhand stores for costumes and props.
The Gallery 7 Theatre presentation of Parfumerie will be performed from December 13 to 21 at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, including two Saturday matinee performances.
