Abbotsford students help the hungry through social media

In order to keep itself going, the food bank in Abbotsford depends upon community support, and three students from the University of the Fraser Valley decided to do what they could to help.

Inspired by other recent successful campaigns, the three realized the power social media can have to make a positive difference, so they decided to use Twitter and Facebook to conduct their ‘Share My Next Meal’ efforts.

As part of the process, which was launched on November 17th, all a person needs to do is take a picture of the meal they are eating, tag it with the hashtag #sharemynextmeal, and let people know which food bank they will be supporting through either a cash or food donation. They then tag three friends who, it is hoped, will repeat the process, thus raising both funds and awareness of the importance of feeding hungry people.

The three students who got the ball rolling did so as part of work in their global Development class at UFV, and noted that they have been pleasantly surprised by the response so far. Though they are based in BC, they have had responses from as far away as Ontario and even Texas.

A social media campaign like this can be made even more of a success by making it part of a charity’s overall public awareness campaign. This can include traditional Print items, as well as other hard copy pieces that have been produced by a printing company for distribution throughout the community.
