The provincial government has provided a grant that will help to prevent flooding in Abbotsford.
The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure recently announced that it is providing $4 million in funds to be allocated to reducing the risk of floods in the community. These abatement projects will protect areas such as the Matsqui Prairie and the infrastructure that can be found throughout the area.
The money will be put to use in bank stabilization along the Fraser River and other areas that can be prone to erosion, and this will provide protection to Highway 11, almost 5,000 acres of land that is used for agriculture as well as historic sites, a communication centre used by the Department of National Defence, gas and water mains, a wastewater treatment facility and more. Newsletter printing can be used to create publications that can be mailed out tot community members to let them know more about projects such as this.
The money that has been provided by the provincial government is a part of its plan to prevent flooding throughout the province. Mayor Henry Braun of Abbotsford noted that:
“This substantial investment by the Province of B.C. will help us to ensure we can protect our community from the flood risks posed by the erosion arcs in the Fraser River.”
Those who would like to find out more about the project are invited to visit the Government of B.C.’s webpage for further details.
