Abbotsford firefighters receive donation that could save a pets life

The Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service now has some additional equipment that will make it easier for it to revive pets that have suffered from smoke inhalation in a fire.

The Mountain View Veterinary Hospital held a fundraiser that allowed it to make a contribution of four pet oxygen masks to the service. These have been included with the lifesaving gear that is carried on each of the trucks.

The masks can be used more than once, and come in three different sizes so that they will be compatible with small, medium, and large pets.

The firefighters were also given training in how to use them, as well as other lifesaving information for animals. They can utilize the oxygen supply that the first responders currently use, and can be used with cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and even birds.

Many fire rescue services distribute stickers for people to put in their windows, alerting rescuers to the fact that there is a pet inside a home. These can be produced by a printing company.

The veterinary hospital raised the funds to purchase this equipment by holding a series of nail-trimming clinics, where people could donate money and have their pets’ nails done. They had originally planned on buying the masks for the township of Langley, but it was such a success that they had collected enough to donate to additional communities.
