Symphony Orchestra to bring Broadway to Red Deer

The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra will be giving a special performance to kick off the new year with ‘On Broadway’, a show that aims to put a new spin on standards from classic Broadway musicals.

The concert will feature orchestral performances of selections from classic shows like ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Les Misérables’, ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’. These standards will be mixed in with more recent hits like Elton John’s soundtrack for ‘The Lion King’, which has been a Broadway staple for two decades, and surprise film hit ‘The Greatest Showman’.

The concert will be conducted by long-time music director and world-champion Morris dancer, Claude Lapalme and violinist Naomi Delafield, who will be serving as concertmaster.

On Broadway will be the fifth show of the Orchestra’s 2019-2020 season. Most of its concerts feature more canonical classical standards, as well as pieces by standout Canadian composers.

Local orchestras and choirs, which often advertise with flyer printing, not only allow people in smaller cities and towns access to live classical music but are often integral parts of the community. The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, which describes itself as central Alberta’s only professional performing arts organization, is no exception, running multiple educational programs for youth.

The Symphony Orchestra will perform On Broadway at the RDC Arts Centre on January 25.
