Soccer to kick off in Red Deer
Cleats will be returning to pitches soon, as the summer season kicks off later this month.
The Red Deer City Soccer Association will begin its normal programming, beginning first with training activities and eventually progressing to competitive matches and leagues. The association is heavily involved in youth soccer, running leagues at various age levels. The youngest, or “Timbits”, levels may feature more of a camp structure this year, with kids being given stations to drill specific skills and actions instead of playing in full matches.
The older, more competitive program is called “Renegades” and gives budding players a chance to test their skill. The program typically involves around 3,000 players, but estimates that sign-up numbers could be significantly higher this year.
The organization also typically offers programs for adults, including a league of teams from around Central Alberta. Sports organizations like these typically draw off community efforts, from grocers to provide half-time refreshments to print shops for championship banner printing. RDCSA present Stephen Kelly expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect of getting back to the pitch:
The Red Deer City Soccer Association is set to resume activities on June 22 at Edgar Park and other facilities around the city. An announcement on the competitive league schedule is expected by July 15.

“The team I coach personally, the parents are pretty excited and I think they’ll all be excited, in general. Just getting kids outside and getting exercise is good for them and good for the parents as well.”
