Red Deer to host pickleball championships

The ninth edition of the Canadian National Championships in pickleball will be taking place in Red Deer next month, with competitors coming from across the country.

The sport of pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis, and it is a popular recreational activity. It is named for the plastic wiffle ball that it is played with. The national championship will run for six days and will contain different competitions divided by age and skill level.

Each tournament will use a double-elimination format, with the possibility of a round-robin tournament for groups with a smaller number of teams or individual competitors. The event is sanctioned by Pickleball Canada under the aegis of the International Federation of Pickleball.

Organizers expect as many as 750 participants from across Canada. The tournament will contain food vendors and sports-related merchants, with all games free to view, and it is hoped to have festival-like atmosphere. The championships are hosted by Red Deer Pickleball, a year-round club that runs regular lessons, clinics and leagues. Recreational sporting events like this typically use trophies and banner printing to celebrate winners, but they also work to encourage people of all skill levels to stay active.

The 2021 edition of the Pickleball Canada National Championship will take place between August 10th and 15th at Motorworks Field, with the 16th reserved as a make-up day in case of rain.
