Red Deer to celebrate the arts this June

The city of Red Deer is hosting a week-long celebration of arts and culture this June, which will culminate in the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards Gala.

Among the events being held will be a Blues Jam with Central Alberta musicians on June 10 at the Hub, the Red Deer Authors Party at Sunworks on June 11 and the Red Deer Art Walk Festival at Rotary Park East on June 15. The events being presented are either free or have a low ticket price.

The Distinguished Artists Awards Gala is held every other year. Up to three artists are chosen each year to receive a cash prize, a medal, a pin and a citation. Past winners have included author Rudy Wiebe in 2009 and visual artist Jane Ash Poitras in 2011. This year, two winners will be honored.

Guests at the gala will be treated to a cocktail reception, dinner, the awards ceremony and a dessert reception. Alberta artists will also be performing at the event. Recommended attire is black tie.

The week of Arts and Culture will take place at various venues in Red Deer from June 10 - 16.The Distinguished Artists Award Gala will be held at Red Deer College on June 15 from 4:30 - 10:30pm.
