Red Deer to celebrate Oktoberfest

Red Deer will once again be hosting a celebration of the German-inspired holiday of Oktoberfest, aiming to bring good cheer and companionship.

The Red Deer festival is produced by the Spirit of Red Deer organization and will be a one-night event full of German food stations offering traditional fare such as sausages and schnitzel. There will be a live band performing German standards such as Ein Prost and polka tunes, and a floor for dancing. The Oktoberfest celebration will be an 18-and-up event with steins of German beer flowing. Originating in Bavaria, Oktoberfest is now a global celebration of German culture, which typically draws millions to Munich for a weeks-long celebration as well as smaller celebrations in cities of all sizes.

General admission will include a filled beer stein and tickets for three food stations. Parking will be free, under a new system at Westerner Park that adds a small facility fee to each ticket to keep the venue sustainable. Oktoberfest celebrations around the world typically feature a combination of traditional music, food, and drink, are promoted through time-tested tools like poster printing and word of mouth. The celebration is being organized by Spirit of Red Deer, a non-profit organization that hosts local community events with the aim of community-building. The organization also hosted an Oktoberfest celebration in 2019.

The Red Deer celebration of Oktoberfest 2021 is set for October 2 at Westerner Park.
