This year marks the 100th anniversary of the city of Red Deer. While events will be taking place all year long, the celebrations will be officially kicked off over the last two days of June.
The Centennial Homecoming Festival will take place in several venues throughout the city over the weekend. It will feature a pancake breakfast at the Parkland Mall, the dedication of the Centennial Grove Legacy Project, and a concert at St. James Gate. There will also be barbecued food, birthday cake and a giant outdoor movie screen.
The second day of the festival will feature such activities as a public walk and Banners on the Bridge, an event which sees Banners featuring imagery representing city's past hung from Red Deer’s bridges.
Rivers of Light will also take place during the festival, giving visitors the chance to see 500 lighted rain barrels floated down Red Deer River. Attendees can then donate funds to help support the commitment to sustainable water.
While it isn’t officially part of the centennial celebrations, the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society will be holding a Canada Day celebration on July 1 at Bower Ponds. It will feature food, cake, music, and plenty of souvenirs to purchase.
Red Deer printing companies have likely been asked to help create the Banners that will be used during the festival.
The Centennial Homecoming Festival will take place from June 29-30 throughout Red Deer, with the River of Light celebration happening on June 30 at 10:30pm. The Centennial Grove dedication will be held at 12:00pm on the Monday. For more information, call 403-340-2013.
