Red Deer teacher recognized by NHL

A Red Deer middle school teacher has received special recognition from the National Hockey League as part of its Most Valuable Teacher program.

Jeremy Spink, a teacher at Eastview Middle School, received the monthly award for February, being selected from a shortlist of 20 teachers from across North America. With the recognition came a customized Edmonton Oilers jersey and a $10,000 grant for Eastview to invest in technology.

Spink was nominated and supported by former students for his involvement in both the school’s hockey program and his encouragement for students to pursue their interests in STEM (science, technology, education and math).

The monthly award puts Spink in the running for the Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher of the Year award, which carries with it a $20,000 prize for the school and $1,000 towards a personal device to improve the virtual classroom space. Spink has used the Future Goals Hockey Scholar program in his classes, tying together STEM education with hockey to help engage children.

Programs like this, often promoted and explained with tools like brochure printing and web pages, can help provide resources to classrooms during difficult times. The Future Goals program made its online content free last year to help parents teach children at home.

Spink was presented with the award on March 4. The winner of the Most Valuable Teacher of the Year honour will be announced in May after another vote.
