Red Deer rugby club celebrates milestone

The Red Deer Titans Rugby Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and it is introducing new Forms of the game as a form of celebration.

The club was founded in 1972, dedicated to introducing the British game of rugby to Central Alberta. Over its decades, the Titans have seen rugby grow into a global game, and helped players who eventually represented Canada on the world stage. Rugby has also become a popular sport among women due to the similar rules between genders.

To commemorate the occasion, the club will hold a weekend-long 50th Anniversary Celebration. The celebration will include a golf tournament at Innisfail Golf Course, a day of rugby games for all ages and genders, and a banquet dinner.

The Titans will also be looking to broaden their membership this summer through the addition of flag rugby, a non-contact option ideal for young players. The club will be gearing up for its summer season, featuring competitive and casual teams ranging from under-seven sides to the “old boys” game. Local sports clubs such as this often draw on community resources ranging from catering from local restaurants to shirt printing from Print shops, bringing people together over the shared love of the game.

The Red Deer Titans Rugby Club will begin its 50th season in May and hold its official anniversary celebration between June 24 and 26.
