Red Deer resident launches drag racing event

A week-long drag race will be taking place across Central Alberta and Saskatchewan, with Red Deer’s Dustin Watts as the mastermind behind the event.

Watts created Miles of Mayhem to cater to racing fans who will be unable to travel to big races in the US this year. The competition will feature street-legal cars running time trials at four eight-mile tracks across Central Alberta. The cars will also have to travel between tracks on public roads without support vehicles.

The route stretches 1,700 kilometres and begins in the Red Deer-area town Rimbey, with stops in Medicine Hat, Saskatoon and Forestburg. Participants are encouraged to share their rides on social media, with many modified or vintage cars expected to be in attendance.

The convoy of modified cars could number up to 200, creating a memorable sight on roads across two provinces. Vehicles will be divided into seven different classes, with the cars with the lowest average time across the five days being crowned the winner. Races like these are known for the culture around them, from colourful banner printing to rowdy spectators. Miles of Mayhem aims to welcome plenty of spectators, offering hotel packages for racers and fans alike.

The Miles of Mayhem Drag Race will start at Rimbey’s Central Alberta Raceway this July 5, with the track also serving as the finish line on the 9th.
