Red Deer girls hockey to kick off season

After their last season was cut short, the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs will return to the ice this November as they kick off their campaign in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

The Chiefs are an under-18 team of girls looking to finish up their junior careers and potentially transition to college or professional career. This year’s team includes Red Deer natives like Lacey Bullee, Halle Graham, Sydney Hollman and Ryann Holbein.

The team held its first training camp in the form of a team building weekend earlier this month. Red Deer has had success at this level before, reaching the finals of the Esso Cup in 2014 and seeing several alumni go on to international hockey success. Junior teams like this, often operating locally and using tools like banner printing to draw attention to their games, can be a crucial step in an athlete's development.

Red Deer’s season will kick off on November 8 with a trip to the Lloydminster PWM Steelers, before holding their home opener at Red Deer College the following weekend with a double-header, also against the Steelers.

Teams have been paired together for multi-game series to help maintain social distancing. Each team will have 14 days for development between series. The Chiefs will begin their second series in December, a six-game engagement with the Rocky Mountain Raiders.

Hockey Alberta has also launched a podcast called Centre Ice to help promote the province’s junior hockey.
