This February will see the debut of the Ice Dragon Boat Festival in the Red Deer region, as Ice Dragon Bot Racing comes to Sylvan Lake.
The event is based on the Chinese tradition of dragon boat racing, but with a Canadian twist, as teams of up to a dozen riders propel long boats across frozen lake. This will be the first time the event is held in Western Canada, with inspiration from similar races in Montreal and Ottawa. The competition is open to teams with any amount of experience, with the aim of bringing in groups of friends or co-workers looking for a unique activity. Teams can use banner printing or coordinated outfits to better showcase their origins or identity.
Each team is guaranteed at least two races across a 100-metre track, and prizes will be awarded in multiple categories, with women’s and mixed-gender races, including special awards such as for the best team costume and team spirit. The goal is to create a festival-like atmosphere, with a large central tent with live music, refreshments and an ice slide attraction. The Sylvan Lake festival was meant to take place for the first time in 2020 but was delayed for public health reasons.
The Ice Dragon Boat Festival will be coming to Sylvan Lake, Alberta on February 10 and 11.
