Red Deer eco campaign launches for 2021

A two-month campaign that encourages Red Deer residents to clean up their natural spaces is underway.

The Green Deer program involves locals registering to pick up litter in their backyard, on the streets and in green spaces, such as parks and hiking trails. Green Deer is a collaboration between several national brands, local radio stations Real Country 95.5 and Zed 98.9 and the City of Red Deer.

Suggested ways to contribute range from picking up a piece of litter every day to doing it while walking a dog or jogging, which has been called “plogging”. The Kerry Wood Nature Centre will be providing free cleaning supplies to all participants.

The initiative offers the possibility of major prizes for those who participate. All registrants will be entered into a draw for a prize consisting of a new barbecue and $200 in gift cards. Participants are encouraged to use social media to share their cleaning activities and create friendly competition with peers.

Initiatives like this, often promoted through means like brochure printing and local media, aim to engage everyday people in helping their communities. Similar conservation initiatives, such as the Red Deer River Cleanup and Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, take place throughout the year.

The 2021 edition of the Green Deer program began on March 21 and will run until May 31. Organizers encourage participants to observe safety guidelines while cleaning.
